Materials Needed:

3 Magnolia stems

7 - 15” balsam pick branches

12 - 12” balsam pick branches

1 - 9 ft. 12mm gold bead garland

1 - gold ivy bush

5 yds. - 2 1/4” wide gold tapestry ribbon

4 pearl grape sprays
4 various gold  instrument picks

green styrofoam block 4”x12”x2”

5 - 18” pieces of 18 gauge wire

floral picks

green floral tape

hot glue gun and glue sticks

U shaped floral pins (optional)

22 or 24 gauge wire

Directions:

1. Create a wire loop for hanging by folding one 18” piece of 18 gauge wire into a U shape. Mark one long edge of the styrofoam in thirds and push the ends of the wire through the styrofoam at those marks until the ends of the wire come out on the opposite long side of the styrofoam. Keep pushing the wire until the loop on the top is about 2” above the styrofoam. Take the ends of the wire and turn them up into the back of the styrofoam and secure on the back of the foam with glue.

2. Lay the styrofoam flat on a working space with the hanging loop away from you. Wire floral picks on the end of two of the 15” balsam branches, wrap with floral tape and insert into the middle of each 4” end of the styrofoam. Push in just until the end of the balsam branch is in the styrofoam. Secure with glue. Cut 5 of the 15” balsam branches 1” below where the branches begin and wire floral picks to each. Place 2 into the styrofoam on the upper edge about 4” in from both ends at an angle toward the outer edges of the swag. Place 2 into the styrofoam on the lower edge about 2” in from both ends at an angle toward the outer edge of the swag. Cut the remaining branch into two pieces with 5 green branches on one half and 4 branches on the other half. Wire to picks and place the larger piece on the top of the styrofoam in the middle in front of the hanging loop and the smaller piece on the bottom of the styrofoam in the middle. Refer to figure 1 for placement of these first 7 balsam branches. Once you have the first 7 branches in, you should take 6 of the smaller balsam picks and begin filling in the swag. Fill in the front of the styrofoam and in between the other branches on the edges of the styrofoam by cutting the wire up near the greens, wiring to a floral pick and inserting into the swag. The greens should appear to radiate out from the center of the swag. Leave the center of the swag a little bare and save the remaining branches to fill in after you have added the other elements of the swag. The branches should create a swag shape which is wider at the middle, tapering down to nothing at the ends.

3. Cut the magnolia stems about 4” below the blossom and wire to floral picks. Wrap with floral tape. Place the blossoms on the front of the swag clustered in the middle as in the photo.

4. Beginning at the left edge of the swag, leaving 5” of the ribbon free, wire the ribbon to the balsam branch, and weave the ribbon up and down in the swag across the entire swag, ending at the right side at the end of the balsam branch. Wire the ribbon to the swag where necessary, and leave a 5” piece free at the right side. With the remainder of the ribbon, create the look of a bow in the center of the swag by using the u shaped floral pins (or small pieces of wire bent into u shapes) to create large loops of ribbon in between, around, and below the magnolias. Every time the ribbon is near the styrofoam, secure it with the u shaped pins or wire. Refer to the picture.

5. Take the bead garland and drape it across the center of the swag securing in the middle with the u shaped pins and on each end with wire. Allow about 4” to drape down on each end. Cut off excess. Form the excess into long loops of 5” to 8”, wire with a floral pick and place into the swag in the middle of the styrofoam just under the ribbon loops. Allow to drape down in the center. Refer to photo.

6. Cut 2 of the grape sprays 15” long, wire to floral picks, wrap with floral tape and place in the swag in each end along the longest balsam branch. Cut 2 more of the grape sprays into 2 pieces each and space around the swag as needed. Place some so they come out from under the magnolia blossoms toward the top of the swag, and some so they come out toward the bottom of the swag.

7. Cut one gold ivy bush apart and wire to floral picks and wrap with floral tape. Cut the longest piece into 2 pieces. Place in the swag spacing evenly throughout and filling in any spaces that have only greens. Cut the leaves off the remaining magnolia stems, wire to floral picks, wrap with floral tape and place in the swag where needed.

8. Bend one end of each of the remaining 4 pieces of 18 gauge wire at a right angle and glue the bent end to the back of the musical instrument picks. Referring to the picture, lay the instruments in the swag where you want them to go. Trim each wire to the necessary length, wire a floral pick to each, wrap with floral tape and place in the styrofoam so they are where you want them in the swag.

9. As needed, cut the remaining balsam branches into pieces, wire to floral picks, wrap with floral tape and place in the swag to fill in bare spots.
